Father of ‘Green Revolution’ envisions first green University

  The ‘Father of Green Revolution’ in India, Prof  MS Swaminathan during his recent visit to  Sikkim Central University, Gangtok had assigned the varsity to be the first green University in the country and to act as a catalyst for an era of bio-happiness and ecology security in Sikkim.
Prof Swaminathan, who is also the Chancellor of Sikkim University said, “the varsity should act as a catalyst for an era of bio-happiness and ecological security in Sikkim and our aspiration should be to be the first green university in the nation.” The member of the Rajya Sabha highlighted Sikkim as a genetic paradise with a rich biodiversity. “The challenge for Sikkim University is on transformation research and translation research to convert concept into products. The priority is to convert bio-resources of Sikkim into job opportunities for the sustainable benefit of the local people,” he added. In his lecture on ‘Preparing for Climate Change’ organised on the sidelines of the varsity’s second foundation year at Chintan Bhawan,  Prof. Swaminathan made an elaborate presentation on food security in the nation in the face of global warming and climate changes. “Climate change is not a theory now, it has become a reality,” said the acclaimed agro-scientist. “Sikkim University is expected to play a major role in the Central mission for sustaining the Himalayan ecosystem as a part of the National Action Plan on Climate Changes,” said the Chancellor. He also touched on various threats to the agriculture of the nation due to global warming and climatic changes and suggested measures for farmers and the government to cope with the changed scenario.
