Impact Of Budget On North East:A Criticial

“We need to revive growth, particluarly in manufactuirng and infrastructure to raise adequate resources for our developmental needs.”

Arun Jaitley
Finance Minister

Finance minister Arun Jaitley presented the Union Budget 2014-15 in Parliament on 10.07.2014.Technically budget of a country is a paper that provides an estimate of the income and expenditure for given period of time. However, analysis of these numbers, have a lot to tell about the intent of the Government on Development in general and on different dimensions, processes and methods of development in particular. This includes among other things, meeting regional and sectional aspirations. As it was the first budget of the NDA Government after winning the recent national elections with a comfortable margin, it had raised the expectations of people across sections and regions. Like other regions of the country, the North Eastern Region (NER) too had its own expectations from this budget against its myriad actual and perceived economic, geographical, and institutional deficiencies often explained to be rooted in history. Let us have a critical analysis of the budget with respect to its possible and intended impact on some of the important dimensions and sub-dimensions of development in this region.
