Federation of Khasi-Jaintia and Garo People (FKJGP)’s

Silver jubilee celebrations conclude

The Federation of Khasi-Jaintia and Garo People (FKJGP) which was formed on November 3, 1989 at a simple gathering held at the Khasi National Durbar Hall, Mawkhar concluded its yearlong silver jubilee celebration at U Soso Tham Auditorium on 13th February.

While speaking at the concluding ceremony, Hek called upon the members of the federation to continue their service to the communities. Recalling the initial years of the federation, Health and Family Welfare Minister narrated the various incidents when the members had to face many hurdles right from transportation to communication. “We had to travel from one village to another to call upon the youth to render their service for the betterment of the society and those were difficult times. Looking at the current scenario, I feel proud to witness the enthusiasm of the youth and their willingness to serve the communities and this is evident from the number of youths joining hands with the federation in this regard,” he said.

The formation of FKJGP is the first successful attempt to unite the indigenous tribes of Meghalaya under one umbrella. Before that, in the mid 80s there has been effort by students of Meghalaya to come under one roof known then as the All Meghalaya Students’ Union (AMSU). However, that endeavour was short lived as the AMSU failed to stay afloat for long.

Activists of the FKJGP led by its leader, Sounder S. Cajee toured the length and breadth of the State including Garo Hills to highlight the people about the aims and objectives of the newly-formed organisation. In the process, hundreds and hundreds of people came forward to associate themselves with FKJGP after being convinced of its credibility.
