After Arunachal Pradesh, is Manipur heading towards

Congress-free-State?

Bijoy Menon

Prime Mnister Narendra Modi’s many  programme includes Congress-free-India, in  which, he could  not  succeed after  his party was defeated in Delhi and recently in Bihar assembly polls.  But he could manage to  make Congress out of power in Arunachal Pradesh in the beginning of 2016.  Now Manipur has been seen with many dissidents in Congress who were demanding for reshuffle in the Ministry of Okram Ibobi Singh and also one-man one-post formula. Although the Congress high command has given a go-head for a reshuffle but Ibobi  found himself in a dillemma after 11 ministers threathend to quit en masse if any of the ministers were dropped.

In 2012 assembly poll, Congress got 47 of 60 seats but it also poised serious problem  for Ibobi since he could not satisfy  all MLAs  a ministerial berth as he had to follow the Tenth Schedule which is against the formation of jumbo ministry.  With just 10 months left for assembly election in Manipur, Home Minister Gaikhangam who appears to be the dissidents main target was responsible for the defeat of Congres candidate in byelection held in November last year.  Both the candidates suffered a humilating defeat at the hand of BJP, in Thongu and Thangemiband AC assembly.  BJP State President Th Chaoba has reportedly told that all the congress dissidents are keen to join BJP  at any time.
