 MECHANIZATION OF SMALL FARMS   BY

USE OF ANIMAL ENERGY

What now and What next?

S. K. Rautaray

Traditional Indian farming was based on the human and animal power and still it has relevance for the mechanisation of small farms in coming years.

Due to ever emerging challenges the farmer is preoccupied with time, energy and cost-effective farming yielding quality produce. The aim is to draw attention to the management of small farms (up to 02 ha) using animal and human power. There have been some changes from the past showing successes and failures. Therefore the purpose should be to assess: what about the present, what technologies have been developed, what are now available, what have been tried, and what about the future with ideas and approach to fulfil the expectations of the small farmers linking manufactures with the R&D Institutions or coordinating the farmer-manufacturer form of R&D. There are certainly some areas that need to be looked at in greater details besides updating the activities and findings of the animal energy utilisation for small farms mechanisation.
