KAMAL HAASAN MAKES NATION PROUD WITH FRENCH AWARD
K.V. Venugopal

Tamil film actor Kamal Haasan was bestowed with the award ‘Chevalier de L’Ordre Arts et Lettres’ (The Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters) by the French Government recently. Incidentally, Kamal is the second actor from Kollywood to receive the coveted award after the late Sivaji Ganesan.

The actor began his career in the tinsel world in 1959 as a child-artist in the film ‘Kalattur Kannamma” under the AVM banner. Even after completing 300 films, Kamal continues to perform with exemplary skill. It is no less a daunting task for an actor to excel in the tinsel world for more than five decades with aplomb. But, Kamal is indeed a rare exception.

Saravanan, one of the owners of the AVM Studios said recepients of Chevalier award, Sivaji and Kamal, were the product of AVM Productions, as they made their debut with films ‘Parasakti’ and ‘Kallathur Kannamma ‘ respectively, under their banner. It was a successful launching pad for both the talented and versatile actors. The 61-year-old Kamal has enacted various roles with thumping success and has carved out a niche for himself in the film industry.
