Food Adulteration rows Tripura Administration

By Biswendu Bhattacharjee

Tripura government finally re-notified the food safety authority at sub-division level following severe criticism in media regarding non-action against food adulteration under Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006 and the Food Safety and Standard Requirement Act, 2011.

Tripura is one of the most inefficient states in Northeastern region, which never keeps a check on any food items, beverage, soft drinks, fruits, fish, vegetables or any edibles for past five years. The Acts provided mandatory provisions to ensure food safety before it comes for sale in the market. Accordingly, like other states, 5th Left Front government in 2007 constituted statutory food safety infrastructure and designated officers for surveillance. Unfortunately in last the 10 years, not a single case of punishment for food adulteration was reported in the state. Tripura is flooded with Bangladesh made food and beverage and nonstandard package items from various Indian states but there is no check. According to Health Minister Badal Choudhury, the primary report believed that the fish imported from Bangladesh, Kolkata and Andhra Pradesh is invariably injecting toxic formalin. The chickens are injected with growth hormones and carbide is using for ripening fruits. Hazardous Tartrazine, Sunset Yellow, Carmosine, Ponceau-4R, Erythrosine, Brilliant Blue, Indigo Carmine, Fast Green are used in bakeryand sweets without any scientific standard.
