VENOM , THE MEDICINE FOR TOMORROW
The word venom brings pictures of death and episodes of horror to our minds. We loathe organisms such as snakes, spiders, scorpions, lizards, sting rays, octopuses and tunicates that we associate with venom. Given a chance we would simply exterminate these creatures. Have you ever thought that something as deadly as venom that wields the power to end life could help in improving healthcare? Most of us would say no. But wait, it might just be the medicine for tomorrow. Amazingly it may hold the cure for many human diseases.

It is often said that you have to walk the extra mile to have some kind of extra-ordinary feeling which creates an impact on your life. Although it was a hard and arduous task covering the recent assembly elections in Nagaland from a remote and underdeveloped corner of the State, it was a different kind of experience. Initially, when my office asked me to cover the Nagaland elections from Mon district, I was a bit unhappy as I had never goneto the location nor had covered any political activity during my past 15 years of journalism. But since journalism is all about being prepared to take up challenges, I agreed to the task and set out for the same along with my photographer. I stayed in Mon district for around 15 days and had experienced many things during my stay in the district.
Sixty five million years ago, the southern hills and cliffs of the Khasi Hills rose in some places from the green plains below at a sheer steep perpendicular of ninety degrees comprising deep gorges from 30 metres above mean sea level to 1964 metres, the highest being Shillong Peak. Places between the contours of 1250 metres and 1380 metres receive the highest rainfall in the world, that is places between Sohra and Pynursla, along a zone of 30 kilometres stretch and 3 kilometres wide.
On the 15th of December 2012, Meghalaya entered the pages of history in the country through the launch of the ‘Megha Health Insurance Scheme’ (MHIS). The MHIS is the only health insurance scheme in the country to provide health insurance coverage to all the people of a State barring government employees.
