Mining Your Own Business

The Government is losing millions of dollars in foreign exchange from coal export via Tamabil Dawki while officials turn a blind eye.

The Tamabil Dawki Land Custom Station (LCS) in the Amlarem sub-division of Jaintia Hills district of Meghalaya is a major land port and one of the oldest in North East India. With Jaintia Hills district being a main producer of coal in the state; it is therefore not surprising that the major export of India through the Tamabil inland port in Dawki is coal and limestone. However, the sad fact is that the Government is losing millions of dollars in foreign exchange exporting coal to Bangladesh from this port. A surprise visit to the port made one realize the truth that exporting of minerals particularly coal is benefiting the exporters rather than the state exchequer and in the process the state is losing a huge amount in foreign exchange and tax.

Silly Point Sibal

Moral Policing in Cyber Space

There’s all sorts of jokes and comments going around in cyberspace at the expense of Kapil Sibal. One of the most laudable one-liner seems: ‘Get well soon, Kapil Sibal Mamu’.

The term ‘Mamu’ – means ‘maternal uncle’ but in Mumbai parlance, thanks to Bollywood films, it is generally used for some unreasonable,  self-righteous obstinate person. All these adjectives ironically apply easily on Sibal, Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh’s preferred choice as Telecom Minister replacing scam-tainted A Raja.
