Last night when I spoke to my friend in New York, she sounded distressed and disconcerted. She even shared with me that she felt suicidal at times because she hasn’t met her friends for weeks now. And all I could do was nod in agreement. But after I hung up the phone, I started analyzing why didn’t I or the females that I was in touch with in my vicinity, were never so expressive, needless to mention we all were equally upset.

When I started reading about lockdown and mental health, I found that women were more affected than men.

The Indian people all over the world, especially from Tamil Nadu were delighted when the U.S. Senator Kamala Harris, the first black and Indian American woman was chosen to be the running mate of Democratic candidate for the Presidency, Joe Biden. Incidentally, Kamala was born in 1964, to Shyamala Gopalan, a cancer research analyst from Chennai, and Donald Harris, an economics professor from Jamaica. She rose to greater heights as a District Attorney of San Francisco in 2004 and seven years later became the first female Attorney General of California. She was also acclaimed as a progressive prosecutor and played a pivotal role in bringing down the record of the death penalty in the criminal system.

Barak Valley for its strategic location bordering Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, Meghalaya and the district of Dima Hasao has been infamous for it being a corridor of extremists, smugglers, illegal transportation of Burmese betel nuts, black diamond and now trafficking in wild life with overseas connections. The alert and vigilant police team led by Apan Chandra Paul in charge Lyllapur detained the truck, signalled the drivers, Narsimha Reddy and Navnath Tukaram, to park the vehicle aside the NH 54. It took 10 years time for Assam government to make the state’s rice farmers shift to new generation crop – Submergence tolerant….and finally the concept is now popular at least among 60 percent of farmers of the flood hit districts.

Three such rice varieties Ranjit Sub – I, Dhansiri Sub – I and Swarna Sub – I are very common in the paddy fields as farmers now have the confidence that these are high yielding in one hand and can survive at least for 21 days under water.

The concept ‘Submergence tolerant’ was introduced for the second point – these varieties could survive for a longer time in flood water. When deluge goes away transplanted siblings rejuvenate rescuing the farmers from crop lost.

The biggest paper mill under Hindustan Paper Corporation Ltd in Assam’s Morigaon district has not seen any sign of rejuvenation even 6 years after Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s revival promise.

New Delhi assured a lot to the mill employees from time to time but all these later became a nightmare to them as government is found inching towards its hidden strategy of handing the mill over to some private parties. The mill’s shutter remains closed for the couple of years. Three mill employees committed suicide so far as they are deprived from the money they deserve from the government.

As September  approaches there begins a change in Delhi, morning becomes cooler, midday sun a bit friendly, humidity too pretends to be packing off  and a sense of an all pervasive  thermal  comfortability becomes visible  outdoors. I still remember P A Sangma was born on 1st September 1947and the remembrance takes me to look back and a montages of memories come crowding in: some events are still clear while some got blurred, perhaps the inner flash is partly diffused.

As India finally said bye, bye to the Nehruvian-era non-starter Hindi Chini Bhai Bhai slogan that never saw Beijing acting brotherly with New Delhi, China now indulges in using water as weapon to harm Arunachal Pradesh and other parts of the Northeast India.

By constructing an artificial lake on the Yarlung Tsangpo River in Tibet just above Arunachal Pradesh, China has deliberately created fear of a potential “water bomb". If the lake is breached purposely, it can devastate the Siang Basin inundating vast areas in Northeast.
