Letter from the Editor-in-Chief

Three states of North Eastern Region viz., Meghalaya, Mizoram and Manipur will be celebrating its Golden Jubilee in January / February 2022. Meghalaya will celebrate its Golden Jubilee on January 21, 2022. Ahead of its celebration, Eastern Panorama, took the stock of its journey, comparing the levels of development with Mizoram and Manipur. Though Mizoram was actually curbed out initially as a Union Territory, yet its comparison becomes relevant, as it has its own distinct identity. We availed the services of two well known Academicians and Professors  viz., Dr. Purusottam Nayak of NEHU Shillong and Komal Singha of Sikkim University Gangtok, who did extensive research and presented many interesting eye opening facts which will help the administration of Meghalaya to look beyond and ahead for the well being of its people. Sustainable development goal and human development are the key issues which reflect the pattern of development in the region. True, Meghalaya is lacking heavily in the Education Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure, yet doing better in many other parameters of development. On this historic occasion, we take the pride in congratulating the people of Meghalaya for attaining 50 years of Statehood Day, without forgetting Mizoram and Manipur which has also shown remarkable achievement in the process of development.

The Assembly Elections are fast approaching in Uttar Pradesh and other few states of India. But the focus of all parties is on Uttar Pradesh, because it will determine the fate of 2024 general elections of the country. The trumpcard played by Yogi Government by modifying the Kashi Vishwanath Temple at Varanasi, has created a huge momentum in the region in favour of BJP. The 700 crore Kashi Vishwanath Corridor was constructed by the UP Government in time bound manner without having a single court case. Around 1400 shopkeepers, tenants and homeowners were rehabilitated amicably. This reflects the leadership shown by the Yogi Government. The message is very clear. If intent is pure, then the results are bound to be positive. The government’s determination brought the total change of scenario. Today Varanasi is a much sought tourist destination. We have given an indepth story on the issue including historical perspective for the benefit of our readers.

Back at home, the debate for repealing of AFPSA has come up again. I personally believe that excessive use of Army, within the country, in law and order matter, is not a healthy practice. The Army may not be aware of the local geographical condition and as such the probability of making mistakes is more. This is exactly what is happening in the North East.

It has been observed that a number of times, civilians lost their lives due to mistake in identity. Hence, it is important to relook the law. A law must have an element of justice and a touch of humanity. We hope that our readers will react and send their valuable inputs on the issue.

As the year 2021 comes to an end, we are heading towards a new chapter in 2022. May this New Year bring a lot of positive vibes and prosperity to all.

WISHING ALL OUR READERS A VERY HAPPY NEW YEAR!
