A Brainstorming Conclave was organised by North East Centre For Technology Application and Reach (NECTAR) at the Auditorium of the Administrative College at Khanapara of Guwahati on November last year.

NECTAR has a unique and distinct mandate to be a Solution Designer and a partnership institution in focusing on providing technology applications for unique problems of the Northeast in consultation with State Governments. Once the technology gaps and the needs of the state governments are understood, NECTAR, as per its mandate, is required to scout for appropriate technologies to address the same from centrally funded laboratories/institutes and then on successful demonstration, transfer it to State Governments for replication. 

Dr. Partha Jyoti Das, Secretary of an NGO Aranyak, drew the attention towards the flood and suggested various solutions to the perennial flood with the help of existing technology.

Prof P. Mahanta, Director of NIT Arunachal Pradesh, focused on taking some experimental projects on various problems that Assam is conflicting with, while Sh. Ravi Shankar, Director of NID Jorhat, proposed bamboo based industries for manufacturing furniture and other industrial products.

Seva Passport Kendra Shillong to get new office

The office of ‘Seva Passport Kendra’ Shillong which fall under the Ministry of External Affair (MEA) government of India will be shifted to the new building of Department of Information and Public Relations (DIPR) in Lachumere Shillong.

Meghalaya Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong said that the Meghalaya cabinet has agreed to let ‘Seva Passport Kendra’ Shillong to utilize the building in order to run its office in the new building of DIPR on a rent basis.

Prestone Tynsong said that the ‘Seva Passport Kendra’ Shillong will have to pay to the state government Rs. 27,000 per month for using the building as its office.

UDP unanimously endorse the resolution on ILP

The United Democratic Party (UDP) today during the Central Executive Committee (CEC) meeting have decided to field Ranikor sitting MLA Puis Marwein as the candidate for the upcoming 26 Langrin Constituency MDC election which is schedule to be held on 28 February 2020.

Speaking after the meeting Jemino Mawthoh said that though the UDP have already field its candidate form the MDC election the party will still need to sit and discuss with the Hill State People Democratic Party (HSPDP) as they are both in the coalition known as the Regional Democratic Alliance (RDA).

Meanwhile the UDP has also asserted that the party welcomes the order of the Supreme Court to give time 4 weeks to the central government to respond to the PIL file against Citizenship Amendment Act 2019 (CAA).

Meanwhile UDP senior leader Bindo Lanong said that the party also welcomes the ‘Resolution’ of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly to implement Inner Line Permit (ILP) in the State.

“It is the right time for the Central Government to fulfill the demand of the state government to implement Inner Line Permit in the State especially with the ongoing implementation of CAA in the country” he added.

Asked on whether the UDP will persuade the MDA government to remove BJP from its alliance, UDP Vice President Allantry Dkhar said that it is not the sole duty of UDP to take such decision but it will be a collective decision of all partners in the MDA to take such decision.

26-Langrin Constituency MDC election on 28 February 2020

The By-Election of 26-Langrin constituency of the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) will be held on 28^th February 2020 and the counting of votes will be held on March 03 2020. The bye-election is necessitated in view of the demise of United Democratic Party (UDP) MDC, Nasar Marweiñ on October 2019. 

This was informed by Deputy Chief Minister, Prestone Tynsong informed that the publication of electoral rolls will be held on January 28^th 2020.

Prestone Tynsong said that the last date of filing claims and objections will be held on February 12 and the disposal of claims and objections will be held on February 13 and the final publications of electoral rolls will be held on February 15.

He also said that the date of notification for holding of the bye-election will be issued on February 17 where as the last date of filing of nomination will be on February 19 before 3 pm.

The chaos after citizenship Amendment Bill

After the bill was approved on December 4, 2019, violent protests erupted in Assam, especially in Guwahati, and other areas in the state. Reactionary protests were held as well in several metropolitan cities across India, including Delhi, Bangalore, Ahmedabad, Hyderabad, Jaipur, Kolkata and Mumbai.

As a reaction, protests were also held at universities across the country. By 16 December, the protests had spread across India with demonstrations occurring in at least 17 cities including Chennai, Jaipur, Bhopal, Lucknow and Puducherry. In Maharashtra, the students of Tata Institute of Social Science and the University of Mumbai , Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Marathwada University in Aurangabad and the Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) in Pune staged protests in solidarity with their counterparts at the Jamia Millia Islamia and Aligarh Muslim University. Students from various SPPU-affiliated colleges and members of organisations such as the National Students Union of India, the Students Federation of India and the Yuvak Kranti Dal took part in the protest.

Prem Singh Tamang popularly known as P. S. Golay formed new government as “Parivartan” (CHANGE) after fighting for second time (2014 & 2019 general election).  P. S. Golay took the oath as 6th Chief Minister of Sikkim at Paljor Stadium here where thousands of witnessed oath taking ceremony. This was for the first time in the State; general public witnessed the oath taking ceremony of Chief Minister of Sikkim.

Pawan Chamling and his party legislators decided to boycott assembly proceedings till P S Golay, his newly-elected successor, remains in office. Chamling his 15 legislators boycotted the inaugural sitting of the 10th Sikkim Legislative Assembly in protest against Golay holding the chief minister's post unconstitutional. Chamling called Golay is ineligible to occupy any constitutional post after being disqualified from as an MLA, after he was convicted in a corruption case in 2016.
