Lack of government support coupled with trouble and unrest in hilly region pushed the ginger farmers of Assam to go for an alternative. Situation goes to such an extent that for farmers ginger cultivation is no longer ‘viably cultivable crop’ and in hilly region of the state, farmers start shifting to other ‘long term items’.

Till 2010, the state recorded a huge quantity of ginger production annually. Ginger produced specially in Assam’s Karbi Anglong and then NC Hills (present name Dima Hasao) is known for its quality and organic aspects. Other popular ginger belts includes two lower Assam districts- Nalbari, Borpeta, two east Assam districts – Sonitpur, Darrang, three upper Assam districts – Golaghat, Sibsagar, Tinsukia and central Assam’s Nagaon district.

The people, even in their wildest dream would not have imagined that a strong-willed and a film actor of the calibre of Sushant Singh Rajput would commit suicide. The inevitable occurred when the Bollywood matinee idol had taken the extreme step on June 14, this year. Sources in the industry cite quite a number of reasons for the 34-year-old handsome-looking actor’s premature death. The psychiatrist Mini Rao opines that he did not take the requisite medicine on the day that led to his departure from the earth. The general opinion, however, is that Rajput could not withstand the stress and strain due to mental depression that enmeshed him for quite some time prior to his death.

That subsequent to the demise of the “Chhichhore” actor, reports are rife in media that Sushant’s death was not simpliciter a “suicide” but was in fact a case of “abetment to commit suicide” involving Bollywood biggies such as: Karan Johar, Sanjay Leela Bhansali, Salman Khan and Ekta Kapoor, as the abettors.

Lately, Advocate Sudhir Kumar Ojha got registered an F.I.R. against the alleged abettors in Bihar (Muzaffarpur). That the F.I.R. has been registered under the following Sections of the IPC:

All are hoping for a remedy to stop the specter of death that loomed so large that it shadowed the entire world. Its specter kept on darkening on every passing day. And it continued!

Grimness of the situation can be gauged from the fact that even as normalcy in worldly affairs slowed down, the coffin makers and crematorium workers turned hyper busy to handle bodies of the dead.

Meghalaya has the lowest number of Covid-19 positive cases among the other states in India with 46 cases. The government took a wise decision at every crucial moment and handled the situation very well. Even before the countrywide lockdown, the state government got the message across and the result was that the people got used to lockdown conditions well in advance. The success in controlling the outbreak of COVID-19 in Meghalaya can be said that it is a collective effort from the Government initiatives with the public support. The state recorded its first positive case for COVID-19 on 13 April 2020 after a senior doctor from Bethany Hospital was tested positive. In the aftermath, the state Government has taken an initial step by sealing off all borders including inter-state, inter-district and international border.

The blowout incident at the Baghjan oilfield of the Oil India Limited (LTD) is saddening.  This can well be considered as one of the worst industrial disasters which the country has witnessed in the recent times. In other words, this is the second such major leaking incident since 2005 – let alone several other similar incidents of oil and gas spill in the recent past. Notably, the Baghjan gas leak happening is literally a two-part story, but, depressingly, both incidents have been a  bitter pill to swallow for the people, especially those who live  in villages within two kms radius of the uncontrollable gas outflow site. To argue precisely, both the incidents have almost irreversibly damaged lots of still-existing precious resources --cropland, water-bodies, a national park et al in its vicinity but have also taken heavy toll on the villagers’ livelihoods.
