Media undoubtedly is an important pillar that pumps oxygen into the lungs of democracy for its healthy growth and survival. But the question that is being asked is does media fulfills its obligations? Does it convey the news without any pride and prejudice? The importance of media can hardly be over emphasized. With the rapid development in technology, the media today is able to handle tonnes and tonnes of news and events all over the world in the shortest possible time. There are smaller siblings of media like internet, Facebook, Twitter, Satellite channels etc... all engaged in disseminating news to the people across the world. The North East India comprises 7 states often called seven sisters with one brother Sikkim added to this family. There is no other region in our country which so sumptuously mirrors our country's heterogeneous heritage as the North East as a whole. It is a kind of mini India.  North East India as a whole looks like an ocean of beliefs and dialects and the growth of media including the print media is quite encouraging.

“Love jihad” is widely believed to be a conspiracy theory used by right-wing groups who accuse Muslim men of converting Hindu women by marriage.  Now it is going to be a punishable offence in Madhya Pradesh as the Shivraj Singh Chouhan government is bringing a bill in the state assembly against forced religious conversion for marriage. Four other BJP-ruled states—Uttar Pradesh, Uttaranchal, Karnataka and Haryana—are in varying stages of introducing bills to criminalise what the party calls “love Jihad.”

The sudden uproar over penalising “Love Jihad “ appears to have been triggered by the murder of Haryana girl Nikita Tomar in October this year.  As the murder case continued to grab headlines with her family members alleging that the 21-year-old had been shot dead by a Muslim man whom she had refused to marry, BJP-led state governments announced they will pass laws to prohibit interfaith marriages involving forced conversion.

North East’s first-ever specialised "Ginger" Processing Plant at district Ri-Bhoi in Meghalaya is being revived and is likely to become functional in the beginning of 2021.

Disclosing this after reviewing the functioning of the North Eastern Regional Agricultural Marketing Corporation (NERAMAC), a PSU working under the aegis of the Ministry of DoNER, Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER), MoS PMO, Personnel, Public Grievances, Pensions, Atomic Energy and Space, Dr.Jitendra Singh said that the only Ginger Processing Plant of North East India was established around the year 2004 but has remained non-functional for many years. The NERAMAC has now undertaken the responsibility of reviving it and initiated steps to operationalize the closed Plant through PPP mode, he said.

There is little dispute over the fact that Assam which is sarcastically called by many as the ‘Far-East’ of our country, having been geographically ‘out of sight out of mind’ syndrome of New Delhi for not being strong constituency as UP or Bihar, is essentially an agrarian state. But ironically, it has over the years become unpredictable as weather in summer due to global warming. In effect, the annual revenues the fund-strapped state earns from tea, agriculture, etc, are too meagre to undertake any profit-yielding infrastructural development projects in a town or city alone without financial assistance from the Centre and other financial establishments.
