South Assam, better known as Barak Valley, in close proximity to the borders of Bangladesh, Tripura, Mizoram, Manipur and Meghalaya has been known as ‘an island of peace’ in North East India notwithstanding some discordant notes. But, the recent unearthing of a racket with a wide network engaged in recruits for ISIS and fake passports has jolted the administration, security and intelligence agencies of Karimganj and Cachar districts, nay the state, and sent alarming bell to the seat of administration, Dispur. Great sensation prevailed when police acting on specific inputs arrested 4 Bangladeshis and 2 Indian linkmen from Balia near Bangladesh border under Nilambazar police station.

According to a police source, the Bangladeshis and the Indian linkmen were arrested while disposing of a dead body identified as that of Izzad Ali of Sylhet. It was revealed subsequently that Ali was also a part of the gang who suddenly fell ill and believed to have suffered a sudden stroke.

The two Indian linkmen have been identified as Sajan Ahmed and Moinul Haque Choudhury of village Khagrail. All of them were found travelling in a Tata vehicle which was seized by the police. They were brought to Nilambazar police station for interrogation by the officer in-charge Alim Uddin Mazumder. Pradip Ranjan Kar, SP of Karimganj, then took them to the town police station where they were subjected to intense crossexamination.

Their interrogations led to the arrest of several others from different locations of Karimganj district. Till the filing of the report, a police source from Karimganj says, around 15 persons have been rounded up, interrogated and sent to jail under various charges of abetment. The Congress GP (Gaon Panchayat) president of Binodini, Manowara Begum, and her husband Hizbur Rahman had been taken to police station for interrogation and later on arrested.
